Rail passenger rights

Key points to remember

The European regulation on rail passenger rights applies to all national and international rail transport services in the European Union. On this page you will find all the information you need to know about your rights in the event of disruption (cancellation, delay) on a journey involving a connection.

How do I know if a journey involving a connection booked on SNCF Connect entitles me to rights?

First of all, you need to know which rail companies are handling your journey. If you don't know, we can help you find this information in three easy steps on the SNCF Connect app:

  1. Étape 1

    Go to the “Tickets” section,

    then select the relevant journey.

  2. Étape 2

    Scroll down

until you reach the details of your journey.

  3. Étape 3

In the details of the journey,

the names of the train companies operating each part of your journey and the associated logos are displayed.

Next, make sure that your booking meets the following 2 conditions:

  1. Your journey involving a connection has been paid for in a single transaction
  2. and that the connections for your journey were offered to you by SNCF Connect and are indicated as such. In other words, you didn't arrange each of the parts of your journey yourself.

If you book a journey involving one or more connections, your tickets are considered to be a "Direct Ticket". The "Direct Ticket" groups together all the tickets for a journey with connections, provided that the connection times set by SNCF Voyageurs are respected and that the purchase is made in a single transaction. Now that you know which carriers are handling your journey, click on the relevant paragraph below and follow the instructions.

  • If your journey involves one or more TGV INOUI*, INTERCITÉS, OUIGO or TER trains operated by the same railway company: you benefit from the rights in force since 7 June 2023 in the event of disruption on this trip.

N.B.: TER trains operated by Transdev are not covered by these rights when combined with trains operated by SNCF Voyageurs.

    You have several options:

    • BEFORE the journey, if you learn that one of the trains is cancelled or that a delay of more than 60 minutes (30 minutes for TGV INOUI) is expected on arrival at your final destination, you can cancel your journey and request a full refund.
    • DURING the journey, if you learn that your 2nd train has been cancelled or that a delay of more than 60 minutes (30 minutes for TGV INOUI) is expected at your final destination: you will be covered from end to end (free return to your departure station, continuation of the journey on a rescheduled train or on a later date).
    • AFTER the journey, if you arrived at your final destination more than 60 minutes late (30 minutes for TGV INOUI), you may be offered compensation. This compensation will be paid in cash. You may also be offered a refund in the form of travel vouchers, provided that the conditions applicable to these vouchers are sufficiently flexible, particularly with regard to their period of validity and the destination. If you do not expressly accept these travel vouchers, the compensation will be paid in cash. You will be informed of the main features of the travel vouchers offered before you make your choice.

*including international TGV trains Paris-Luxembourg, Paris-Freiburg im Breisgau, Paris-Barcelona, Paris-Milan, and journeys within France on a TGV Lyria or a TGV in cooperation France-Germany, Brussels-France.

Visit the SNCF Voyageurs website to find out what to do if your journey is disrupted.

  • If your journey involves one or more Eurostar trains (to England, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany), this means that your journey is handled by the same railway company: you therefore benefit from the rights in force since 7 June 2023 in the event of disruption on this journey.

    You have several options:

    • BEFORE the journey, if you learn that one of the trains is cancelled or that a delay of more than 60 minutes is expected on arrival at your final destination, you can cancel your journey and request a full refund.
    • DURING the journey, if you learn that your 2nd train has been cancelled or that a delay of more than 60 minutes is expected at your final destination: you will be covered from end to end (free return to your departure station, continuation of the journey on a rescheduled train or on a later date).
    • AFTER the journey, if you arrived at your final destination more than 60 minutes late, you can claim compensation.

To find out more about the support and compensation measures in place for trains (to England, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany), visit the railway company's website.

Important: if your journey involves a train (to England, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany) and a OUIGO, TGV INOUI, TER or INTERCITÉS train, you will not benefit from the rights in force since 7 June 2023 in the event of disruption on this journey.

    This means therefore:

    • In the event of a problem during your journey, you will be charged for transferring to a later train or for re-routing.
    • In the event of a delay, you will only be compensated for the part of the journey affected by the delay.
  • If your journey involves a train operated by another railway company, we invite you to consult the website of that railway company to find out about the coverage and compensation terms in the event of missed connections or delays of more than 60 minutes to your trains:
