Surrealist Figueres

TGV INOUI’s first stop in Spain, Figueres, is a stone’s throw from the French border and offers a complete change of scene.

This small town in northern Catalonia is where the painter Salvador Dalí was born. Brimming with museums and architectural wonders, Figueres has a strong Catalan identity.

Key sites in Figueres

Stroll around the historic centre looking for modernist houses made of stone, iron, ceramics and more, and feel like you’re in the Catalonia of the late 19th century. Stop off outside a bar for some tapas. The town hall square is surrounded by covered walkways and feels like a village square.

Don't miss: the beautiful Sant Pere church and Torre Gorgot. Don’t be surprised if you see eggs on the tower... Salvador Dalí was here! This is also where you find the colourful and unmissable famous Dalí Theatre-Museum devoted to the Catalan genius. An artwork in itself, it offers the chance to immerse yourself in the artist’s world.

See Dalí’s famous giant eggs, his mouth-shaped sofa, his legendary limp clocks and many other works, some specially created for this venue. Dalí also decided to showcase the work of other artists here, including El Greco, Marcel Duchamp and Marià Fortuny.

An adjunct to the museum, the Dalí Jewels collection presents the jewellery designed by the artist in lit cases.

On a hill on the edge of Figueres, Sant Ferran castle is a pentagonal military fortress built in the 18th century by Juan Martín de Cermeño. Europe's biggest modern fortress, it’s the most imposing landmark in the whole of Catalonia!

Colourful Girona

Welcome to this charming city by the Onyar river in the north-east of Spain. It’s worth visiting all year round, with a calendar of Catalan fiestas, cultural events, fairs, markets and more.

Key sites in Girona

Before you walk through the alleys of the upper town, view it from the other side of the river where overlapping colourful houses and bell towers are reflected in the Onyar. Magical!

For a lovely viewpoint, head to Pont de las Palanques Vermelles bridge built by Gustave Eiffel before the Eiffel Tower.

Explore the maze of passages in Girona's old town with small squares, medieval houses and landmarks around every corner. Climb up to Girona Cathedral to see its spectacular Gothic nave and the treasures in its small 4-room museum.

Also enjoy an original visit to Girona’s Arab baths constructed in Roman style in the 12th century and inspired by Roman baths. See the circular vault and the dome held up by narrow columns and ornamental capitals around the central basin.

If possible, try to visit Girona in May during the flower festival. This event showcases the city’s heritage through floral compositions and upcycling. While the festival mostly takes place outside, some iconic buildings do open their doors for it.

Barcelona
